Shoemaker sharp in return as Halos take opener

Matt Shoemaker threw five shutout innings, and Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning to lead the Angels to a 3-1 win over the Rangers on Monday. Rangers “opener” Jeffrey Springs threw two scoreless innings before handing it over to Ariel Jurado, who added another four shutout frames. Texas loaded the bases in the seventh, but Justin Anderson struck out Ronald Guzman to escape the jam. Blake Parker closed the door for the Angels, picking up his 14th save.
