Castillo shuts down Cards, K’s career-high 11
It appeared that Daniel Poncedeleon was going to repeat his success against the Reds, who sent out Luis Castillo against a Cardinals team that he’s struggled against. Poncedeleon retired the first nine Reds batters, but he ran into major trouble, allowing RBI doubles to Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez and loading the bases before exiting in the fourth. Castillo ran with the early lead, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-high 11 in 6 2/3 scoreless frames. Tyson Ross provided 4 2/3 innings of 1-run ball in relief for St. Louis, and the Reds’ bullpen was strong behind Castillo to keep the shutout intact.
