Ahmed slams, but D-backs settle for series split

Anthony Rizzo’s one out homer gave the Cubs a walk off win over the D-backs, 7-6, on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The D-backs led by as much as 6-1 and they held a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth with closer Brad Boxberger on the mound. David Bote hit a two-run homer to tie the game, and Rizzo followed with the game-winner. One day after his throwing error led to the winning run scoring, D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed came up big, though, as he hit a fifth-inning grand slam. The D-backs capitalized on a lack of control by Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood and reliever Brian Duensing to load the bases. Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning before Steven Souza Jr. grounded into a double play.
