Girardi, Phelps, Pena ejected; benches clear

Things escalated quickly at Tropicana Field on Tuesday, as the benches cleared and three Yankees were ejected in the late innings of the Rays’ 6-1 win. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was tossed in the top of the eighth, and his replacement — bench coach Tony Pena — as well as right-handed reliever David Phelps were ejected a half-inning later, after Phelps sent a fastball under Kevin Kiermaier’s chin and to the backstop — a play that emptied both dugouts.
