Rendon hits clutch HR; Nats win on Phils’ gaffe
Max Scherzer struggled in his rematch with Aaron Nola and the Phillies, allowing three runs in five innings, but Anthony Rendon’s two-run homer in the ninth capped a late rally as Washington won the first two against slumping Philadelphia. Aaron Nola did his part, limiting the Nats to two runs (one earned) in seven innings, but the Phils’ bullpen struggled again. Odubel Herrera and Jorge Alfaro took Scherzer deep. The game ended in stunning fashion, as pinch-runner Vince Velasquez — representing the tying run — left second base early attempting to tag up, and was ruled out on replay review.
